Example 4: Civil Action

Reasonable Accommodation Requests

Social workers play a critical advocacy role in helping clients obtain reasonable accommodations in supportive housing. Working as part of interdisciplinary legal teams, they assess clients’ disabilities, health conditions, and functional needs and translate that information into clear, strengths-based advocacy with housing providers and landlords. Social workers gather documentation, coordinate with medical and mental health professionals, and communicate directly with supportive housing agencies to request accommodations such as modified rules, unit adjustments, or enhanced services. By centering lived experiences and rights under fair housing and disability laws, social workers help remove barriers to housing stability and ensure clients can remain housed and access support.

Collateral Civil Needs

Civil social workers assess clients’ housing, income, health, and family needs and integrating those realities into legal advocacy. Working alongside attorneys, they help clients navigate interconnected systems such as public benefits, healthcare, and community services, while providing context that strengthens legal defenses. This interdisciplinary approach extends beyond the courtroom connecting tenants to stabilizing supports that promote long-term housing security.

Eviction Prevention

Social workers engage tenants early to conduct holistic, client-centered assessments that identify housing instability, income and benefit gaps, health and disability needs, and family or caregiving concerns. By understanding the full context of a tenant’s circumstances, social workers help shape comprehensive advocacy strategies that inform legal defenses to achieve outcomes for clients.
